Zambia's education sector faces significant challenges, particularly in secondary education. One of the biggest hurdles is the shortage of secondary schools and qualified teachers, especially in rural areas. About 4,000 secondary schools are needed to meet the demand, leaving many children without access to secondary education. Currently, only about 42.9% of children of the relevant age group are enrolled in secondary school. The Johannes Beese Foundation addresses these deficiencies by primarily using its funds for the construction of secondary schools and teacher houses. These houses serve as an incentive to attract teachers and their families to remote areas.
The current focus is on the Choma region, but there are also projects in Lusaka, Monze, Chisekesi, and other parts of Zambia.
- Below, we present three of our Zambian projects in detail.

Kaamba is a settlement in a forested region, 22 km from the nearest larger town, Muzoka. The road is not passable during the rainy season. Dedicated parents built the first primary school themselves.
Since 2021, the Johannes Beese Foundation has been involved in the construction of the secondary school. It started with a classroom block. The following year, construction continued with another classroom block. At the end of 2022, the local school authority announced that 14 teachers would be sent to Kaamba Secondary School
This significantly high number allowed the school management to start not with one, but with two classes, directly enrolling over 100 students.
At the end of 2022, the teacher houses were completed, and the school block was equipped with laboratories. In 2023, intensive work was done on the construction of the second teacher house, which was completed at the beginning of 2024. The last teacher house is also planned for 2024. With the construction of a school hall, the school is expected to be completed in 2025.
The Mboole Secondary School was founded by "Brethren In Christ Zambia," a Protestant church. Since 1998, it had operated as a junior secondary school. In 2017, DEBS (District Education Boards Secretaries) approved the school as a full secondary school. When the Johannes Beese Foundation began supporting the school in 2019, there were only three classrooms for more than 700 students.
To date, the foundation has built two classroom blocks (in 2019 and 2021), one with four classrooms and offices, and another with five classrooms. The community also built an additional classroom block with three classrooms on its own initiative.
In 2020, the school's laboratories were completed by the Johannes Beese Foundation. In 2023, the construction of the first teacher house began, which was completed at the beginning of 2024. In the following years, the foundation will build three more teacher houses and complete the school construction with the building of a school hall.
The village of Singani is near the villages of Siankope and Siamvula. Since 2017, the foundation has been active here, initially funding the neighboring primary school and teacher houses.
Since 2021, the foundation has supported the construction of Shalom Secondary School, starting with the school block, which includes the library and computer room. In 2022, a block with teacher housing was built, and the school block with laboratories, a home economics room, and additional classrooms was completed.
In 2023, the last block with teacher rooms, administration, and infirmaries was built. The construction of the next teacher house started at the beginning of 2024. Another teacher house and the school hall are still to come. After that, the school construction will be completed for the time being.
